A research published in the Journal Planta Medica in 2008 discovered that an enzyme extracted from pineapple stems known as bromelain is superior to chemo-agent 5-fluorauracil in treating cancer in the animal model, and the survival index in approximately 263%, relative to the untreated control. 5-FU has been used as a cancer treatment for about 40 years, and has been unsuccessful because of its less than perfect selectivity at killing cancer, often killing and/or irreversibility damaging healthy cells and tissue. It is very toxic, and fluoride-bound form of the nucleic acid uracil (a normal component of RNA), while the drug should work by tracking more rapidly dividing cells that include cancer and healthy intestinal, hair follicle immune cells, into taking up, inhibiting RNA replication enzymes and RNA synthesis.

The material safety data sheet (MSDS) for 5-FU states:

Potential Acute Health Effects: Very hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of ingestion. Hazardous in case of inhalation. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (permeator), of eye contact (irritant). Sever over-exposure can result in death.

Potential Chronic Health Effects: CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. MUTAGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. TERATOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Not available. The substance is toxic to blood. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage. Repeated exposure to a highly toxic material may produce general deterioration or health by an accumulation in one or many human organs.

115mg/kg is the given dose at which 50% of the animals die, that is the equivalent of 7.8 grams for 150 lb adult human.

Routes of entry: Absorbed through skin. Inhalation. Ingestion.

Toxicity to Animals: Acute oral toxicity (LD50): 115 mg/kg [mouse].

Chronic Effects on Humans: Very hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of ingestion. Hazardous in case of inhalation. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (premeator).

Special Remarks on Toxicity to Animals: Not available.

Special Remarks on Chronic Effects on Humans: Not available.

Special Remarks on other Toxic Effects on Humans: Not available.

A dose of 7.5 gram dose of 5-FU will kill 50% of the humans. However, Bromelain’s MSDS states the LD50 to be 10,000 mg/kg, or the equivalent 1.5 lbs of bromelain for a 150 lb adult, meaning that it is 3 orders of magnitude safer.

How can such an enzyme from the stem/core of a pineapple be superior to a drug that millions of cancer patients over the past 40 years have placed their hopes of recovery, and exchanging billions of dollars? There exists an effect that is associated with a lot of natural compounds named “selective cytoxicity” that can induce programmed cell death within the cancer cells and leaving the healthy cells and tissues unharmed. There is no FDA-approved chemotherapy drug on the market, thus cancer treatment is still in the dark ages that often destroy the quality of life, accelerating the patient’s death. Actually the non-selective nature of the chemotoxic agent lead to death.

Bromelain will never receive approval by FDA. Now, Capital doesn’t flow into the development of non-patentable cancer therapies, even if they work, are safe and affordable. Until our government is compelled to utilize our tax dollars to invest in this type of research, there won’t be any level playing field in cancer treatment, or any other treatment which will be offer through conventional medical establishment. Some of us may make a decision to take their health in their own hands, using the research which is available on natural cancer treatment pages and inform our treatment decisions without the guidance of the modern day equivalent of the “priest” of the body, the conventional oncologist that fills the description of an “applied pharmacologist/toxicologist”.
